About Saligram:
- A shaligram, also called a shalagram shila is a particular variety of black stone collected from riverbed or banks of the Kali Gandaki, a tributary of the Gandaki River in Nepal, used as a non-anthropomorphic representation of Vishnu by some Hindus. They are typically fossils of ammonite shells from the Devonian-Cretaceous period of 400 to 66 million years ago. The black stones are considered holy because they bear symbols associated with Vishnu naturally, without any human intervention.
- There are two varieties in saligram
* Plain
* Sudarshan Chakra
- Plain Saligram:
* Plain saligram does not contain any chakra and it is irregular in shape. It comes in all sizes.
- Sudarshan Chakra Saligram:
* In this Sudarshan chakra is present inside the saligram. It can be further classified in two models.
* Fixed type
*Openable type
- Fixed Type:
* In fixed type sudarshan chakra can be seen through a hole.
- Openable Type:
* In this variety the saligram openes in two pieces and the sudarshan chakra can be seen on both sides.
- This are basically the different types of saligram. But different people name them differently according to their belief. Like for examples Ram Avatara, Krishna Avatara, Kurma Avatara. But technically all are same.
